The house is yours now that you’ve unpacked the boxes. Next?. You are now in charge of keeping your house’s interconnected systems running smoothly.
Regular maintenance can greatly reduce the likelihood of emergency contractor calls. Also, regular maintenance extends the life of your systems and mechanicals, increasing the value of your home AND freeing up funds for other purposes.
We’ll go over a basic home maintenance plan.
Daily, we may not look beyond our living rooms. It’s not just the walls that keep our homes comfortable; it’s the systems. Homeowners must understand these systems and what they require from us to remain safe and functional.
Electrical
The electrical system in your home starts with the cables coming in and ends with your ceiling fans and toaster. Electricity enters your home via the fuse or breaker box.
Plumbing
Your plumbing probably has a “main shut off valve” in the water main or private well for major emergencies. A pressure tank, water heater, and softener are common mechanical stops before pipes climb up walls and floors (typically made of lead, copper, or PVC).
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
You may be able to live without air conditioning , but everyone relies on heating systems to keep warm. Your home is probably heated by hot water, hot air, electric coils, or wood. Some homes use radiant heating, which uses waves embedded in the floor.
Exterior, roof, gutters
We can almost forget about them during the winter, but maintaining your home’s exterior systems is critical. Ice damming, hail and other hazards can damage or compromise the roof. While siding requires less frequent maintenance than the roof and gutters, it should still be inspected seasonally for damage and wear.
Doors and Windows
Doors and windows are great because they let in fresh air and sunlight. During the winter, they can let the cold air in and the warm air out. Unfortunately, they also act as a deterrent or a magnet for pests. Weather-beaten windows and doors can become loose, sticky, or rot. Simple maintenance tips can reduce heating bills and keep doors and windows in good condition.
Alarms for the home
Your home protection system may include smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, CO monitors, and fire ladders. Annual checks and occasional replacements will keep your family safe.
You and your family have access to various home maintenance services both inside and outside the home. Many of these services are included in internet or cable bundle plans.
